Cloning the Vm (which in turn removes the snapshot solves the problem for the clone but clearly not the clone'e) This is not a viable work around as I must keep this snapshot :-(

But it is not recommend to keep the snapshot for a longer period. That will heavily affect your virtual Machine performance and also VMware dont recommend this. Try to remove asap.
