Tom the /etc/login.defs is no longer available in ESXi 5.0. The KB 1025642 refers to an earlier version.

single instance of VDP appliance is capable of protecting up 100 VMs (recommended limit). But i did noticed few deployments sharing the load with 2 appliances as well

VDP supports up to 100 VMs per appliance. However if this is a Ent or Production environment that you want to backup, I'd advise you to stay away from this product and look at 3rd party alternatives.
