If you can not repair the virtual hard disk with vmware-vdiskmanager then you'll need to create a new virtual hard disk and reinstall however base on what I saw in the .vmx and .log files (more errors then just the virtual hard disk) I'd start fresh by creating a new Virtual Machine in VMware Player, selecting the proper Guest OS (which isn't properly selected in the existing VM) and install Ubuntu.  Then maintain proper backups so as not to have to unnecessarily create a new VM in the future!
