Micro-segmentation will continue to work irrespective we use hardware/software bridging.

Hi vijayrana968, just a follow up question, i got my VM to power up thanks , checked that VM's disk partition storage and it shows below:

As you can see it has a lot of free space. But here's the thing, when i check on my ESXi Server Storage it shows below which indicates that my overall storage is full wherein fact i should have free space:

I dont quite get it why.... Is it maybe because of my VM's configuration? Below's my VM's Resource Consumption and some setings:

Re: Difference between a Internal and Uplink port on a DLR

Starting from deployment all the wayhw we consume the features in DLR there are lot of difference and routing scenario is just one example which is already posted in this thread. From an interface perspective while LIF acts as a GW for VM . If you need a outbound connectivity to another VM(different subnet) on same host  after the Route check packet will be locally routed. However if source and destination is on different servers or if it is P-V connectivity requirement ,we need a Uplink for DLR . Behind the scene route check will always happen on Source Hypervisor however destination being on different server packet should go all the way via physical layer - How you send that l3 packet is a design choice - Static/Dynamic etc etc..  That doesn't mean you can connect DLR-DLR and establish a routing - ideally Edge would be the next hop device - Uplink concept is same for DLR&Edge .

Hi experts

I can mount the vmware tools and then  i am confused

from the line #$cmd = "$($DrvLetter) to -ArgumentList $cmd i am lost

my confusion is also at the line -ComputerName $vm  or ComputerName $VM.Name

$GuestCred = Get-Credential .\administrator

$VMs = Get-content .\myservers.txt

#$vms = get-vm

foreach ($VM in $VMs)

{

    #Mount VMware Tools Media

    Mount-Tools -VM $VM

    $DrvLetter = Get-WmiObject -Class Win32_CDROMDRIVE  -ComputerName $vm -Credential $GuestCred |?{$_.VolumeName -match "VMware Tools"}|Select-Object -ExpandProperty Drive

#$cmd = "$($DrvLetter)\setup64.exe /S /v`"/qn  REBOOT=ReallySuppress  ADDLOCAL=ALL`""

$cmd = "$($DrvLetter)\setup64.exe /S /v`"/qn  REBOOT=ReallySuppress  REINSTALL`""

$go = Invoke-WMIMethod -path Win32_Process '

-Name Create '

-Credential $GuestCred '

#-ComputerName $vm '

-ComputerName $VM.Name '

-ArgumentList $cmd

}

Not too sure why you're experiencing that. We have a policy in place that activates a VM 10 minutes after creation. If it is then vmotioned to another host, as long as that host is protected with a DSVA, the VM remains activated. These are Windows 7 VMs or some other OS?

VM Workstation 12.5.6 GUI freezing/stuck when Client Power ON

$

I am having an issue where when I power on a client, one of 3 things will happen :

1) Client starts normally

2) I get a VMware initializing screen, that will stay forever. All options to this client will be greyed out, this is the most common.

3) Black Screen, I can't see what is going on, but inputs are available, rare

In 2) & 3), if I try to close the VMWare workstation window from taskbar, I get a "Virtual Machine is busy" message

If I kill the VM workstation from task manager, it will be killed and when I restart the VM workstation, I will see that client already powered on and running normal.

There is no time from the kill to restart of VM workstation for the client to have reached that stage of startup,

so the only conclusion is that the client runs fine when I initially power on, but the workstation GUI failed to connect to it properly.

Once the VM workstation GUI connects to the VM clients, it works fine even I reboot the client multiple times.

Host OS is responsive throughout.

Any idea what might be causing the issue ?

My host is Windows 10 Pro 1703, with 24GB ram.

VM Workstation Pro version is 12.5.6 build 5528349

Clients include windows 7 SP1, 10 1703, Server 2012 R2 and CentOS 7

For reference, this is how our activation policy works for newly created VMs. Again, if a VM is moved, if it's already activated and the destination host is protected, it should remain activated. I would say this policy works 99.9% of the time.

We assigned the policy of Windows Anti-Malware, vs. the more specific Windows 7 one, because we use vShield still and not NSX.

Hi nov1ce ,

you are perfectly right. This issue is caused by NIC enumeration that occurs after applying a BIOS, firmware, patch upgrade or adding new NIC’s.

Vmware already has a kb on the similar issue.Please look into this issue which explains in a better way than anyone can:- ESXi/ESX host loses network connectivity after adding new NICs or an upgrade

Please let me know if you have any queries after reading this Knowledge base article.

Hi,

Not sure as there is not a lot of information to work with, none of what you mention is particularly out of the ordinary

Does your host have NVMe Samsung disks? If so update the drivers to version 2.2 (or up)

Do you use Avast or AVG antivirus? If so then read this thread: XP VM suddenly slow, Win 7 fine

Hope this helps,

Thank you.

I have a doubt but this is a new thread asking questions.

Re: Difference between a Internal and Uplink port on a DLR

Hmm, still doesn't quite answer my question. I've been playing around a litte. I deployed a DLR w/o Edge-Appliance, assigned two lif's.to two vds's The router could be used by virtual and physical hosts, no matter if the Interfaces were internal or uplinks. My impression was, that in this scenario, there is no difference between the two. Different story if you add the Edge-Appliance. Every uplink Interface gets a vNIC on the appliance, internal Interface doesn't. This makes senese as only uplinks carry dynamic routing traffic and firewall rules for managemet traffic can by applied to uplinks. I think, only the OSPF/BGP traffic is carried over the vNIC of the appliance, the worklod traffic still uses the kernel but again, for the kernel forwarding, there seems to be no difference between internal and uplink..

For the ESG it's obvious. It's a vm with up to 10 vNICs w/o any kernel Routing involved.

Anyone can confirm this?

I think you are in the wrong forum for your problem, this is the forum for VMware User Environment Manager.

The information is correct. The free space you are seeing is inside guest level, on host level you have allocated space.

For example : A Father has  $230. He gave $100 to his first son and $120 to his second son.

Now, first son spent $10 on something. He has $90 left. Second son spent $20 on something and he has $110 left. Now father has only $10.

In same way, host allocated 1TB to C: drive and 1.2 TB to E: drive. You are seeing that free space because C: drive is using only 42GB. Same case with E: drive.

No, the order is not important - meet the requirements in any order and you'll achieve the certification, same as when you got your VCP5-DCV.

Thanks for the suggestion, will try disable/uninstall the AV.

I am running on M.2 SATA SSD, MyDigitalSSD 256GB Super Boot Drive 42mm SATA III, no NVMe disk at all.

Anti-Virus is Bitdefender. My VM clients are not slow at all, and the host is not facing any other issue.

It is a new machine, running fine for the first week until 4 days ago.

Reimaging with the original install about 11 days ago still result in the same issue.

Building our own eLearning Labs/Classes within a VMware environment.

Hi all,

I have been pondering this for some time and honestly have no clue which forum I could post this into. I'm not looking at the VMware training offering, but how to create something similar for our own students.

We currently run a relatively large VMware based data centre and utilise part of that for classroom based labs when people are learning to deploy and configure our system. These are relatively simple, and involve students going through the process of setting up our system in the virtual world - all pretty straightforward. What I want to do is take this to a new level, create a pre-defined lab comprising of multiple systems to replicate a real-world environment, but allow us to step through different "snapshots" of the various systems at different points, so I can roll to the next scenario. I can then deliver small sections of content (say certificate authentication), then roll the lab to that scenario and get the students to work through the various potential errors at that point. Once done we move onto the next section and scenario. Finally, I can revert to the original lab settings. I would also want to replicate the entire lab for different students.

I suppose I could build the different systems as I would build any system, then configure them to create an issue, and then snapshot the system. The students could simply select the correct snapshot of the different system and we could continue, however, this seems a little haphazard, and it would be nice if the students could just roll the whole thing on to the next scenario, especially if multiple systems need to be changed.

Anyhow, any pointers are welcome - even if it is just that this is not the correct forum

Cheers

This fixed my problem. Thanks.  But this took me about 30 minutes to troubleshoot.  Can VMWare fix this in the next update? I'm on 8.5.7. Thanks

Help with Windows 10 Guest Crash with Multiple GPU Passthrough

$
0

I am using ESXi 6.5 and having trouble using PCI passthrough of four GPUs to a single Windows 10 guest VM.  They seem to pass through OK initially, before Windows has installed the driver for them.  I can see the four GPUs in Device Manager with the little yellow indicators for the drivers not being installed.  Once the drivers are installed and Windows starts recognizing them, it crashes.  Subsequent startups will crash right after displaying the initial Windows splash screen and before getting to the login screen.  Removing all GPUs except for one will work, and the crashing stops.  I have tried each GPU individually and they all work with no crashing.  I can pass one GPU each to two individual VMs and run them at the same time with no problems.  The crashing begins as soon as I try to pass a second GPU to one virtual machine.  Bypassing ESXi entirely and using Windows 10 as the main OS I am able to use all four GPUs, so I think perhaps I have an incorrect setting.

My hardware is:

Supermicro X10SRL-F motherboard, Intel Xeon 2620 V4 CPU, 32 GB RAM, 4x Radeon RX580 GPUs.

I have enabled above 4G encoding and configured my motherboard BIOS settings according to this article from Nvidia (It's not Radeon but I figured it would apply to my application as well).

MMIOHBase = 2T

MMIO High Size = 256G

All PCIe oprom = EFI

Onboard LAN oprom type = EFI

Incorrect BIOS settings on a server when used with a hypervisor can cause MMIO address issues that result in GRID GPUs f…

I have also added the following lines to my Windows 10 VM configuration:

firmware=“efi"

pciPassthru.use64bitMMIO="TRUE"

according to the KB article I found here:

VMware vSphere VMDirectPath I/O: Requirements for Platforms and Devices (2142307) | VMware KB

Does anyone have an idea of what might be happening here?
